Press release:Cuba: Winnie is the expression of the rebelliousness and strong spirit of African women.

New York, April 13, 2018. Winnie is the expression of the rebelliousness and strong spirit of African women, said the Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, Ambassador Anayansi Rodríguez Camejo, in her statement at the Commemorative Ceremony in honor of Winfred Nomzano Madikizela-Mandela, known in Cuba and around the world as Winnie Mandela, who died on April 2, at the age of 81, in her native town of Soweto.

The event was organized by the Permanent Mission of the Republic of South Africa to the United Nations. The Secretary General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres, as well as representatives of the Member States and accredited organizations, participated in the ceremony.

The Cuban diplomat, who was invited by the organizers to deliver a speech, conveyed the feelings of the Cuban people and government for the death of the African leader, whom she described as a tireless fighter and symbol of resistance against the apartheid regime. She highlighted the worth and courage of Winnie Mandela, who suffered imprisonment and remained with her husband Nelson Mandela, until the definitive victory of the South African people in the 90s.

For Cuba, she said, the united image of Winnie and Nelson Mandela will remain indivisible, and the friendship among the island, both figures and their people will be everlasting.

Rodríguez Camejo reaffirmed that Cuba will maintain its firm commitment to the noble causes of the African peoples and will always be ready to join them in their struggles, dreams and hopes.
