Reception in Grenada’s capital highlights legacy of solidarity between Cuba and Grenada

In Saint George’s, the capital of Grenada, an official reception was held yesterday to mark the 47th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Cuba and Grenada. The event was presided over by Acting Governor General Tillman Thomas, Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, Minister of Foreign Affairs Joseph Andall, and Cuba’s Ambassador, Yadirys Echenique Paz.

In her address, the Cuban ambassador recalled that bilateral ties were initiated on April 14, 1979, barely a month after the triumph of the Grenadian Revolution, inspired by the vision of Fidel Castro and Maurice Bishop. She emphasized that since then, cooperation projects have been developed in sectors such as education, health, fisheries, agriculture, construction, and sports, highlighting that solidarity between the two peoples has been reciprocal and constant throughout the decades.

Similarly, the Prime Minister underscored that relations with Cuba have been a shining example of brotherhood and cooperation in the Caribbean, noting that joint projects have contributed significantly to Grenada’s development, particularly in areas such as infrastructure and professional training. He affirmed that the bonds between both nations will prevail over any obstacle or difficulty.

For his part, the Foreign Minister stressed that friendship with Cuba constitutes a cornerstone of Grenada’s foreign policy, affirming that mutual support in international forums and during times of crisis has strengthened regional unity and the defense of shared principles.

The ceremony was also attended by other members of the Grenadian government, the President of the Senate, parliamentarians, leaders of various political parties, representatives of the accredited diplomatic corps on the island, guests from major media outlets, members of Cuba’s state mission in Grenada, Cuban residents in the country, members of the Committee of Grenadian Graduates in Cuba, and representatives of the Grenada–Cuba Friendship Association.

Relations between Cuba and Grenada have been marked by cooperation across multiple sectors and by exchanges of high-level visits. Among the most notable milestones are the construction of the Maurice Bishop International Airport, collaboration in health and education, and mutual support in international arenas—achievements that have consolidated a friendship projecting into the future.
