Accra, July 6, 2024. - Representatives of the Ghana Trade Union Congress, TUC, held a meeting with the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the Republic of Ghana, Anette Chao García, at the Embassy's headquarters in the Ghanaian capital. The meeting was also attended by the General Secretary of the Socialist Movement of Ghana and important member of Ghana's solidarity with Cuba, Kwesi Pratt Jnr.
The delegation of 39 members of the TUC that visited the island was led by Naa Ayeley Adarfio, Senior Officer in charge of Public Relations at the Ghanaian institution, who is also the Coordinator of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign in Ghana.
The Cuban Ambassador gave a warm welcome to the visitors and thanked them for the solidarity gestures that were appreciated even before the departure to Cuba.
She especially mentioned the donation made by the Svani Group to the Quisicuaba Association and reminded those present of the harmful consequences of the application of the commercial, economic and financial blockade imposed on the island by the United States, as well as the inclusion of Cuba on the list of states that are allegedly sponsors of terrorism, which means that it is not possible to access medicines or raw materials for their production.
Speaking about his experiences in Cuba, Samuel Tetteh Agbettor explained that the visit to the Fidel Castro Centre was a great inspiration to all the members of the Brigade, adding that the tour of its halls reminded them of much of Cuba's history and the common history with Ghana. He stressed that Comandante Fidel is an example of a visionary leader, a man of honour who bequeathed many lessons to his people, as well as to Ghana. With considerable emotion, he said that it gave him goose bumps to remember what he had seen there, the excellence of the organisation and the pedagogical nature of the visit.
Other representatives recalled the days of volunteer work, the warmth of the Cuban people, the joy of the islanders and the wonderful flavours of the local food, even if they do not eat spicy food.
The Coordinator of the Cuba Solidarity Campaign explained that visiting the island gives tools to defend it more. Seeing the massive parade, getting to know the nobility of the people in their natural environment, enjoying the lessons of love from trade union representatives from other nations, made this visit a unique experience that they should pass on to the rest of the trade unionists and to the rest of the affiliates.
She announced that she would soon issue a Declaration condemning the inclusion of Cuba on the List of Alleged State Sponsors of Terrorism because it is a flagrant injustice, which affects the Cuban people and the rest of the world that has enjoyed the solidarity of the island.
Kwesi Pratt Jnr. said it was important for Ghanaians to know the reality of other countries, especially Cuba. He said that it was a country that had been a victim of the hatred of the United States government for decades and still refused to submit to imperialist interests, which was why they would never cease in their efforts to subdue them. He guaranteed that this is where solidarity must help, by finding ways to circumvent the blockade and by making the reality known. He adds that the trade unions are a key player in this.
