Wellington, May 31, 2024 – The iconic Cuban film "Lucía," directed by Humberto Solás, was screened to great success last Friday in Wellington. This event was sponsored by the organization Climate Liberation Aotearoa, as part of its program to foster intercultural dialogue and raise awareness of social and environmental issues through cinema.
The screening was attended by the Cuban Ambassador to New Zealand, Luis Ernesto Morejón Rodríguez, as well as other officials from the Cuban diplomatic mission. The presence of these representatives underscored the importance of the event in strengthening cultural ties between Cuba and New Zealand.
"Lucía" is a masterpiece of Cuban cinema that narrates the lives of three women named Lucía in different periods of Cuban history, exploring themes of love, struggle, and liberation. Before the screening, Belen Cupeiro, representing the Cuban Embassy, addressed the audience, thanking Climate Liberation Aotearoa for organizing the event and highlighting the significance of "Lucía" as a bridge between Cuban and New Zealand cultures. She also emphasized the importance of cinema as a tool for reflection and social change.
In an informal discussion afterward, topics related to film production in Cuba and the cultural and social impact of "Lucía" were discussed. Attendees expressed their admiration for the film and their gratitude for the opportunity to learn more about Cuba's rich cultural heritage.
