Kalamata, december 7th. Just when the 125th anniversary of the fall in combat in Punta Brava of Antonio Maceo, the Bronze Titan, and Panchito Gómez Toro, students and professors of the University of Kalamata and friends of Cuba in this historic Greek region met in the Central Amphitheater of the University of Kalamata to participate in the second public presentation of the book José Martí and “the Greek” (the first took place in Lefkada, on November 27). Neither the strong cold nor the permanent rain prevented an unforgettable night at the University, an intense night shift of several hours, full of historical and current analysis, of evocations of the struggles of Cuba and the struggles of Greece. to the brotherhood between the two peoples, of commitment and militant solidarity with the Cuba that is fighting.
Thanks to all attendees: especially to Dr. Dimitrios Petropoulos, Dean of the Faculty of Kalamata, for the excellent organization of this event, for his welcome, his leadership and for his words; thanks to the Vice Chancellor of the University of the Peloponnese Dr. George Andreiomenos, a prominent Greek scientist and philologist, for the in-depth and detailed study carried out on the book José Martí and “the Greek”, for the meticulous reception and interpretation of this modest work, and for his moving words about the Cuban National Hero. The important speech of Dr. Andreiomenos during the launch of the book José Martí y “the Greek” last night, in the Peloponnese, will soon be published in the Greek language. Also very heartfelt thanks to Vanguelis Giorgokakis, director of the prestigious Greek Editorial TOPOS, for choosing this work for publication in the Greek language, for his presence and his words during the presentation ceremony last night in Kalamata, in which emotional greetings to those present was made by the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to the Hellenic Republic, Zelmys Domínguez Cortina.
Thanks to the Bibliópolis bookstore, in Kalamata, which moved and was present at the University with numerous copies of the book José Martí y “lo Grecia”, which for a few weeks has been available in major bookstore chains in Greece, in different cities of the country.
Thanks to the television stations Messogio TV and Ionio TV, as well as to other mass media present, for the gesture of giving press coverage to this presentation.
Returning from Kalamata to Athens, crossing the cold and rainy dawn of the Peloponnese, accompanied the emotional impression caused by the warm and sincere words heard towards the people of Cuba and their struggle, towards Martí and his immortal work, who also on countless occasions He referred to sites located in this friendly land, which is viewed by its inhabitants with gratitude and admiration. Marti's first mention of any Greek land would be Sparta - located in the Peloponnese, not far from Kalamata - and this would take place, according to all indications, in the dramatic poem Abdala, a work that he would write as a child practicing, and where he evokes a call to the fight for independence:
"—I tell you oh, chief
From the Nubian army! that you throw them
They must shine, in the open air
The sacred flag of the country! -
I tell you that it is necessary that the Nubia
From the oppressor the tongue tears out bold,
And the plain with her blood bathed
And Nubia fought as Sparta fought! - "
Thanks Kalamata, thanks to his University, and to so many friends from Cuba in the Greek land. The book José Martí and “the Greek” will also be presented on the evening of December 10, 2021 in the city of Veria (Central Macedonia); on the evening of December 14 at the War Museum in Athens, and on the evening of December 15, 2021, at the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Athens.
