The Second Secretary Greisy Cordero Suárez, Representative of Cuba, speaks at general comments on draft resolution L.10, “Mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation.” 60th Human Rights Council

Mr. President,

We thank the delegations of Spain and Germany for introducing draft resolution L.10.

Cuba supports the renewal for 3 additional years of the mandate of the Special Rapporteur on the right to safe drinking water and sanitation, which would allow for the continuity of the work carried out on an issue of crucial importance for all countries.

The promotion and protection of the right to safe drinking water and sanitation has a decisive impact on the lives of all human beings, due to its direct impact on food, health and hygiene, disease prevention, agriculture, and economic and industrial development, among others.

We welcome the fact that this draft resolution reflects the collective political will to move forward on a priority issue for developing countries, which are disproportionately impacted by the scarcity of safe drinking water and the lack of sufficient resources for its proper management and use.

Likewise, we acknowledge the willingness of the sponsors to biennialise the periodicity of the report submitted by this special procedure to the UN General Assembly.

We urge the Special Rapporteur to continue to prioritize actions of cooperation, technical assistance and training to States that request it, which constitutes a practical contribution to the promotion and protection of the human right to safe drinking water and sanitation.

For the above reasons, Cuba supports draft resolution L.10 and hopes that it can be adopted by consensus.

Thank you very much.
