Abuja, January 9, 2024.- The Cuban ambassador to Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero, signed the book of condolences on behalf of the Cuban government and people this morning, at the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Nigeria for the terrorist attacks carried out in Kerman during a ceremony for the 4th Anniversary of the assassination of General Qassem Soleimani.
Qasem Soleimani was an Iranian major general, commander of the Quds Force from 1998 until his assassination in 2020. During the Iran-Iraq War, he was commander of the 2nd Division of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps in the province of Kerman. In his later years, some analysts considered him the right-hand man of Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, as well as the second most powerful person in Iran after him.
Soleimani was killed in a targeted US drone strike on January 3, 2020 in Baghdad, Iraq, on the orders of US President Donald Trump. The attack was strongly condemned, including the Iranian government, and a mass funeral was held in several cities in both Iraq and Iran for Soleimani and other victims caused by the drone attack.
As part of her message, the Ambassador conveyed to her counterpart her total solidarity with the Iranian people and government, in addition to conveying her condolences to the victims' families.
