Athens, April 18. In the central Amphitheater of the University of Economics and Business of Athens was held an act of solidarity with Cuba organized by the Jose Marti Cultural Association of solidarity with Cuba and the Professor María Nikolakaki, of the University of Peloponnese.
At the event entitled "The Cuban revolution in education: historical background and current practice", made the introduction Natasa Terlexi of the Association. The Ambassador of Cuba in Greece Zelmys Maria Dominguez Cortina, greeted the event, highlighting the importance of education in Cuba as one of the main achievements of the Cuban revolution, and one of its priorities, starting as one of the problems that had to be resolved as it was mentioned by the Commander in Chief Fidel Castro, in his famous plea “History I will absolve” during the trial for the assault on the Moncada barracks in 1953. She stressed also the importance of this event within the framework of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of the Cuban revolution and the 58 anniversary of Playa Giron victory against Yankee imperialism, in moments in which the unjust economic, commercial and financial blockade of the United States against Cuba is strengthen.
Then it was exhibited the excellent documentary “Teacher”, by the filmmaker Catherine Murphy, dedicated to literacy campaign in Cuba and it was achieved the participation of the filmmaker by Skype in the event, which said a few words and answered questions
After, Professor Dr. Ernesto Domínguez López, of the Centre for studies on USA from the University of Havana made an extensive explanation about the history of education in Cuba and their current characteristics. He was followed by Professor Seida Barrera Rodriguez, from the center of studies of the Cuban economy from the same University, who explained the economic data of the education in Cuba, the State budget and its priority in the country. María Nikolakaki made conclusions of the event. Then, it was an interesting debate where both teachers answered questions from the floor, including on new measures of USA to strengthen the blockade against the Caribbean island
It was an important event in solidarity with Cuba, highlighting important content, almost unknown by the audience, where there were represented different political forces of the Greek society, teachers, students and friends of solidarity.
