The commemoration of International Workers’ Day in Grenada, held on the island of Carriacou, was marked by various interventions from trade union leaders and Grenadian authorities, who reaffirmed their solidarity with Cuba and denounced the hostile policies faced by the Caribbean nation.
The General President of the Grenada Trade Union Council (GTUC), André Lewis, emphasized that the recognition of Cuba responds to decades of cooperation in vital sectors such as health and education. The Senator also affirmed that Grenadian workers will continue to support the Cuban people in the face of the blockade and in the defense of their sovereignty. In addition, he called for collections in Carriacou as part of the solidarity campaign carried out between April 14 and May 14 in Grenada, aimed at supporting the people of the Greater of the Antilles.
Charlene Herbert, representative of the Technical and Allied Workers’ Union (TAWU), and Daisy Hazard, President of the Public Workers’ Union, agreed that May Day is a fitting date to denounce the injustices suffered by workers worldwide. They pointed out that Cuba’s case demonstrates how unity and solidarity can confront hostile policies and defend the right of peoples to decide their destiny.
For his part, Cifus Chase, President of the Seamen and Waterfront Workers’ Union, stressed that cooperation between Cuba and Grenada must continue to expand for the benefit of communities. They affirmed that the friendship between both nations is an example of shared resistance and that the voice of Grenadian workers will remain firm in denouncing the blockade and defending social justice.
