Colombo, November 24, 2025. As part of the centennial celebration of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz (August 13, 2026), and in commemoration of the ninth anniversary of his death, the Sri Lankan Graduates Association in Cuba, together with the Cuban Embassy, organized a well-deserved tribute, demonstrating the enduring relevance of Fidel's thought. Also participating was Dr. Mohamed Waheed, the first graduate from the Maldives to study in Cuba.
At the ceremony, presided over by Cuban Ambassador Andrés Marcelo González Garrido and Chiththadhamma Rathnamudali, President of the Sri Lankan Association of Graduates in Cuba, along with other members of the board, flowers were laid before a bust of Fidel and the flags of Cuba and Sri Lanka.
In his remarks, the Cuban ambassador highlighted Fidel Castro's ideals, his fight for justice and equality, cooperation, solidarity with other peoples of the world, and his brilliant idea of sending many young people from around the globe to study in Cuba and train as professionals. As a result, Sri Lankans and Maldivians contribute the knowledge acquired in Cuba to their respective countries. Beautiful words about Fidel and the revolution were expressed by those present, as a tribute to the country where they were educated and to which they continue to show love and admiration.
