Colombo, January 27, 2025. The Speaker of the Sri Lankan Parliament, Honorable Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne received the Cuban ambassador, Andrés Marcelo González Garrido, with whom he held a fraternal meeting at the Sri Lankan conclave headquarters.
The ambassador delivered to the Speaker a letter of congratulations on his recent appointment from the President of the National Assembly of People's Power of Cuba, Esteban Lazo Hernández.
During the visit, common issues were addressed regarding the historical relations between the two countries and the reactivation of the Sri Lanka-Cuba Friendship Association in parliament.
The Ambassador informed the Speaker of Parliament about the recent statement by the Cuban revolutionary government on January 21, denouncing to the world the decision of the new US administration to reinstate the harsh economic war measures against Cuba, reinstating it in the spurious list of countries that supposedly sponsor terrorism.
Wickramaratne was elected Speaker of Parliament on December 17, 2024. He is a medical doctor by profession and was elected as a parliamentarian for the Polonnaruwa district. The Parliament of Sri Lanka consists of 225 members.
