Sri Lankan press covers Cuba’s reproof of US presence in Caribbean

Colombo, Aug 19 (Prensa Latina) Sri Lankan mass media highlighted the denunciation made by Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez regarding the presence of US naval and air forces in the southern Caribbean.

The Colombo Times newspaper and the World Peace Company (CPM) Media Private Limited website reproduced the Cuban foreign minister’s recent social media post, in which he states that the US military deployment in the Caribbean is being carried out under false pretexts and responds to a corrupt agenda of Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Rodriguez insisted in his post that Latin America and the Caribbean must be respected as a Zone of Peace and rejected any action that compromises the sovereignty of the countries in the region.

Trump administration deployed more than 4,000 additional marines and sailors to the waters surrounding Latin America and the Caribbean under the pretext of fighting drug cartels.

CNN, based on information from two defense officials, stated that this is a drastic show of force that will give Trump a wide range of military options in case he decides to take action against drug trafficking groups.

US Attorney General Pam Bondi and the Department of State recently issued false accusations against Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro related to drug trafficking in the region. They even placed a 50-million-dollar reward for information on the Venezuelan leader’s whereabouts.

These actions by Washington have been condemned by democratic governments, mainly in Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as solidarity groups around the world, who see them as a danger of an invasion of Venezuela.
