State Counselor and Union Minister of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar meets with the Ambassador of Cuba

MYANMAR, February 22, 2018.- The State Counselor and Union Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Aung San Suu Kyi, met with the Cuban Ambassador, Hector Conde Almeida, on the occasion of the presentation of the Credentials by the Cuban diplomat in Nay Pyi Taw.

In the cordial meeting, in which the Union Minister for International Cooperation and officers of the Foreign Ministry of Myanmar participated, both parties acknowledged the good path of bilateral relations and reiterated the mutual willingness to continue strengthening the ties of friendship between the two peoples and governments.

Both sides reaffirmed the importance of joint efforts in defense of the unity, dignity and sovereignty of developing countries and of maintaining close cooperation in the various multilateral fora, among them those related to the achievement of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, promoting South-South cooperation; FOCALAE; the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries (NAM); Human Rights issues; the Paris Agreement on climate change; as well as support for the United Nations Treaty on the total prohibition of nuclear weapons.

The State Councilor and the Ambassador of Cuba expressed mutual interest in strengthening cooperation in fields such as education, health, biotechnology, agriculture, food security and direct bilateral trade for the benefit of both peoples.

The Ambassador of Cuba thanked the Chancellor, the government and people of Myanmar, for the support to the United Nations Resolution on the need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States government against Cuba.

Myanmar and Cuba have had diplomatic relations since 1976, through concurrent missions based in New York and Bangkok respectively.
