Statement by the Ambassador of Cuba, Rodolfo Benítez Verson, at the dialogue on the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territories. 58th Human Rights Council.

Mr. President,

Cuba denounces and condemns in the strongest terms the genocide against the Palestinian people perpetrated by Israel, supported by the weapons, funds and veto of the United States and the complicit silence of others.

The current humanitarian catastrophe in the occupied Palestinian territories is a continuation of more than seven decades of illegal occupation, abuse, attacks and exclusion.

How many more children and women must be massacred before the international community acts and provides the urgently needed international protection for the Palestinian people?

Every minute of impunity and inaction means that more innocents will continue to be killed, maimed, detained and displaced.

We reject any plans to force the Palestinian people off their land, which would constitute a serious crime of ethnic cleansing. Gaza belongs to Palestine, not to Washington, Tel Aviv or anyone else.

We demand respect for the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and to build their own independent and sovereign state. There is no other effective way to halt the spiral of violence, save human lives and chart a viable course for peace.

It is up to this Council to take action so that those responsible for and complicit in this barbarity are held accountable and face the consequences of their actions.

Thank you.
