Statement by Ambassador Rodolfo Benítez during the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Federated States of Micronesia

Mr. President,

We extend a warm welcome to the delegation of the Federated States of Micronesia and acknowledge that country’s commitment to the Universal Periodic Review.

We commend Micronesia for the adoption, in February 2024, of the Early Childhood Development Policy, which constitutes a roadmap for the promotion and protection of the rights of young children.

We highlight the efforts undertaken to address the multiple challenges associated with climate change.

In a constructive and respectful spirit, we make four recommendations:

  • Continue implementing the National Strategic Plan for the Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases in order to effectively respond to the growing prevalence of these diseases in the country.

  • Continue ongoing efforts to ensure accessible services and safeguard the rights of persons with disabilities, promoting respect for those rights and their full inclusion in society.

  • Continue national efforts to combat trafficking in persons.

  • Further improve and update national legislation and government policies for the promotion and protection of the human rights of its people.

We wish Micronesia every success in this review and in the implementation of the recommendations it has accepted.

Thank you very much.
