Mr. Vice-President:
In recent weeks, numerous countries, the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, and dozens of mandate holders of this Council have been denouncing the extremely serious violations of the United Nations Charter and international law, including international human rights law, committed by the Government of the United States through its brutal and illegal military aggression against Venezuela.
However, the response of the Council has been one of absolute silence. No special session has been convened to consider such grave developments. Only a few voices have been raised in this chamber to name and condemn the responsible party, despite the widespread expressions of rejection of the unacceptable and dangerous conduct of the United States heard in the corridors of this building.
By contrast, in the case of the Islamic Republic of Iran, a special session has been swiftly convened and, without delay, a resolution condemning that country has been prepared. This does not surprise us. Such a pattern of evident double standards, selectivity, and politicization is unfortunately repeated time and again in this body.
Cuba categorically rejects any form of intervention or foreign interference in Iran and in any other country. We oppose any attempt to exploit internal situations in pursuit of geopolitical agendas.
We denounce the imposition of selective and intrusive mandates and mechanisms, which are always directed against developing countries and which have proven for years to be totally ineffective in the promotion and protection of human rights.
We will continue to defend dialogue and constructive cooperation as the only effective way to promote human rights.
Thank you very much.
