Mr. President,
Cuba reiterates its firm rejection of punitive and biased mandates established against the will of the concerned State, which have for years proven ineffective in the promotion and protection of human rights.
These interventionist mechanisms, imposed year after year against certain countries—always from the Global South—do not contribute to the cause of human rights. On the contrary, they become an obstacle to respectful dialogue and genuine cooperation, which are the only effective ways to advance the promotion and protection of human rights in any country.
The mechanisms imposed against Iran, in addition to undermining sovereignty, constitute a waste of the limited human and financial resources of this Council.
The report presented on Iran does not include a single reference to the ongoing aggressions by the United States and Israel against that nation, which constitute flagrant violations of international law and international human rights law.
We call for respect for the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iran and all nations in the region, and for an end to actions that cause human harm and damage to civilian infrastructure in Iran and Arab States. We reiterate our call to preserve the principles of good neighbourliness, restraint, and dialogue at this delicate time.
Nor does the report mention the serious impact of unilateral coercive measures imposed against the Iranian people for decades, and their devastating consequences on women, children, and the elderly. Cuba reiterates its strong rejection of these measures and calls for their elimination.
The silence of both procedures on these relevant issues reflects the pattern of selectivity and politicisation that characterises the punitive and interventionist mandates imposed in this Council against certain States without their consent.
Cuba will continue to advocate for the promotion of human rights in all countries on the basis of dialogue and cooperation, grounded in impartiality, respect, and non-interference.
Thank you very much.
