Mr. President,
Cuba thanks the Special Rapporteur for his presentation and his report on land, territory and the right to food.
The planet produces more than enough food to feed the entire world population. In fact, more than 1 billion tonnes of food suitable for human consumption are wasted or discarded every year. Yet, hunger continues to increase annually.
The report confirms that hunger and malnutrition are not the result of food scarcity. The root causes are structural in nature, particularly deep inequalities in distribution.
Mr. President,
For Cuba, the right to food is a priority. Our Constitution establishes that all persons have the right to healthy and adequate food.
However, the United States continues to use the blockade to deprive the Cuban people of this human right. No government should have as a policy the imposition of hunger on other nations.
Despite this, Cuba will continue working tirelessly to find solutions to this adverse challenge, with the commitment of leaving no one behind.
We reiterate our support for the mandate of the Special Rapporteur. Cuba will present at this session of the Council a draft resolution on the right to food, as part of efforts to promote the realization of this human right. We thank you in advance for your valuable support for this important text.
Thank you very much.
