Statement by Ambassador Rodolfo Benítez Verson at the plenary session of the Conference on Disarmament on the aggressive escalation by the United States against Cuba

Mr. President:

The United States government has embarked on an unprecedented aggressive escalation against Cuba. Its actions are aimed at ruthlessly punishing our entire population.

They threaten to impose trade tariffs on imports of products from countries that supply oil to Cuba. They intend to make the international community complicit in an energy blockade against our nation.

Such behavior constitutes an assault on the sovereign prerogatives of States to export their goods and resources to the countries they deem appropriate, without foreign interference.

To justify such extreme actions, they use the absurd assertion that Cuba constitutes an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security of the United States.

Unlike the United States, Cuba has never been a threat to the United States, its national interests, or the well-being of its citizens. Nor has it supported any hostile activity against that country, nor will it allow its territory to be used against any other nation.

Cuba does not threaten or attack any country. We are a peaceful, supportive, and cooperative nation, ready to help and contribute to other states.

We appreciate and are grateful for the expressions of international solidarity, which demonstrate the isolationist nature of the U.S. policy of strangulation and economic warfare against the Cuban people.

We will confront this new attack with firmness, equanimity, and the certainty that reason is on our side.

Cuba will continue to defend multilateralism, international law, and peace, essential pillars for a more just and secure world.

Thank you very much.
