Today, July 26, 2025, we join the Cuban people in in solemnly commemorating of the 72nd anniversary of the historic assault on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes Barracks— an event that marked a turning point in Cuba's revolutionary struggle for justice, sovereignty, and social dignity.
The events of July 26, 1953, led by the young Fidel Castro and the brave men and women of the Centennial Generation, were born out of deep frustration with the oppressive regime of Fulgencio Batista. Although the attack did not succeed militarily, it ignited the revolutionary flame that would eventually triumph on January 1, 1959. As Commander Fidel Castro once said, "The Moncada taught us to turn setbacks into victories," and this enduring message of resilience continues to inspire people across the world.
This date is more than a remembrance of a heroic act; it is a symbol of the Cuban people’s unyielding determination to resist tyranny and fight for a more just and independent society. The sacrifices made at Moncada sowed the seeds of the Cuban Revolution and opened a new chapter in Latin American and global history.
As the Cuban Alumni Association of Sri Lanka, we stand in solidarity with our Cuban brothers and sisters. We extend our heartfelt admiration to the people of Cuba and salute their continued efforts to uphold the ideals of justice, equality, and independence. We especially recognize the province of Ciego de Ávila, where this year’s national commemoration takes place.
Let this day remind us all of the courage it takes to rise against oppression and the importance of preserving the values for which so many gave their lives.
¡Hasta la victoria siempre!
