Statement by the delegation of Cuba in the interactive dialogue with the Working Group on the issue of human rights and transnational corporations and other business enterprises.

Mr. President,

Access to safe, sufficient, and nutritious food, as highlighted by the Working Group, is a fundamental human right that is inextricably linked to all aspects of human life.

Unilateral coercive measures hinder the realization of the right to food in affected countries, such as Cuba, and must be eliminated.

States have a fundamental role in the development and implementation of laws, standards, and regulations that ensure transnational corporations comply with international human rights obligations, and contribute to the creation of sustainable food systems and the progressive eradication of phenomena such as land grabbing, food fraud, labour exploitation, and environmental degradation.

Cuba reiterates its support for the adoption, as soon as possible, of a legally binding instrument to regulate the activities of transnational corporations and other business enterprises. The scope of the instrument must be in accordance with resolution 26/9 of the Human Rights Council.

Thank you.
