The Jamaica Cuba Friendship Association joins with majority of the world’s progressive community in commemorating the 70th anniversary of the assault on the Moncada Garrison, as a pivotal moment in Cuba’s revolutionary history.
Beginning with the fact, that the courageous action of the young revolutionaries led by Fidel, its defeat and the brutal repression which followed by the blood – thirsty US-backed regime, did not have the desired impact of driving fear and causing the people to cower and lose hope.
But it had the opposite effect of igniting a spark in the hearts and minds of the Cuba people, that the brutal and repressive dictatorial regime of Fulgencio Batista could be challenged.
Most importantly too, Fidel’s self defense in the aftermath of Moncada assault which is immortalized in the ‘History Will Absolve’ speech, provided the blue-print and laid the foundation that majority of the peoples sees as the beacon of hope , where the ‘ brotherhood of man’ trumps the ‘dog eat dog’ neo- liberal capitalist system that has brought ruin and disaster to mankind, especially to the poor and down trodden.
Equally significant, is the fact that the Cuban people ‘bought ‘ into the program as outlined by Fidel(History will Absolve Me) and were united and strengthened by the leadership by example that were exemplified by Fidel and the Communist Party of Cuba(PCC)
It is this unity that has been the cornerstone of our sister country’s resistance and ability to stand up ,against the most vile and powerful economic and military empire in the history of mankind, the government of the United States Of America.
Not only has Cuba resisted an unprecedented inhumane, illegal, criminal, economic and financial blockade for over 60 years, which the majority of citizens throughout the world via their representation in the United Nations General Assembly, has condemned, while calling for its unconditional removal for the past 29 years, with only the ‘terrible twins’, namely the USA and Israel supporting this iniquitous imposition.
They have also had to resist against a mercenary invasion-organised by the USA, fought biological warfare and withstood murderous terrorist campaigns that has resulted in in the death of 3478 innocent lives being lost, injuries to over 2099 of its citizen, not to mention the immense and incalculable economic cost that that this undeclared war has wrought on our sister nation. If that was not enough, an unrelenting propaganda war of misinformation and disinformation, the likes that have never been seen in annals of one country’s relationship with another, since the triumph of the revolution in 1959.
So the presence of our brothers and sister collaboration team here, standing side by side with there Jamaican counterparts in areas of health, education, engineering etc, is living testimony of the fact that the actions of Fidel and the young revolutionaries in 26th of July Movement is alive within the ethos of the Cuban people, and History has Absolved Fidel.
