Havana, March 12, 2026. — In the spirit of goodwill and of the close and fluid relations between the Cuban State and the Vatican, with which communication has historically been maintained regarding the processes of review and release of incarcerated individuals, the Cuban Government has decided to release in the coming days 51 persons sentenced to imprisonment. All have served a significant portion of their sentences and have maintained good conduct in prison.
Since 2010, the Cuban government has granted pardons to 9,905 prisoners, while in the last three years, as part of Cuban practice and under the provisions of our legislation, another 10,000 persons sentenced to imprisonment have been released through various benefits.
This sovereign decision constitutes a regular practice in our criminal justice system and has characterized the humanitarian trajectory of the Revolution, which this time coincides with the approach of the religious celebrations of Holy Week.
