Statement from the Rødt Party of Norway condemning the US blockade and the inclusion of Cuba on the List of State Sponsors of Terrorism

Rødt strongly condemns the terrorist label and the illegal blockade of the United States against Cuba.

An overwhelming majority of UN member states voted in favor of the UN resolution asking for the lifting of the illegal US blockade against Cuba. 187 countries voted in favor, including Norway. The United States and Israel were the only countries to vote against the resolution.

For 31 consecutive years the UN Member States have voted in favor of the same resolution. Regardless of the government's political stance, every country except the United States and Israel support the resolution each year. The international community is aware of the illegality of the unilateral blockade and the great damage it is causing to the Cuban people. Due to the blockade, Cuba loses the opportunity to participate in open trade with other countries in the world and is a major obstacle to Cuba's economic development.

Under the Trump administration, Cuba was also included on the US list of state sponsors of terrorism. According to the United States, this is due to Cuba's involvement in the peace process between the government and the guerrillas in Colombia, a peace process in which Norway has also participated. The terrorist qualification was criticized by the then Minister of Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Søreide (H). Despite the change of government in the United States, Cuba remains on the same list. The United States continues its imperialist policy towards Latin American countries and rises above international laws and conventions to achieve its own political and economic interests.

Rødt strongly condemns the terrorist label and the illegal blockade of the United States against Cuba. US policy towards Cuba inflicts great harm on the Cuban people and is an obstacle to its development. Rødt supports the overwhelming majority of countries that demand the lifting of the illegal blockade against Cuba.
