Statement by the Saint Lucia-Cuba Friendship Association marking the 50th anniversary of the Barbados bombing, and opposing the blockade and Cuba's inclusion on the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism

We recall the Barbados bombing with sorrow and solidarity. On October 6, 1976, a bomb destroyed a Cubana de Aviación aircraft in mid-flight, claiming the lives of 73 innocent people, including 24 young athletes from Cuba’s national fencing team who were returning after proudly competing for their country. This act of terrorism—one of the most heinous committed in the Caribbean—stands as irrefutable proof that Cuba has been a victim of terrorism, not a sponsor of it.

The Saint Lucia–Cuba Friendship Association, declare the following:

We reject Cuba’s inclusion on the List of State Sponsors of Terrorism. We reiterate that Cuba poses no threat to any country in the world. Its people have been victims of terrorist acts, sabotage, biological attacks, and an economic blockade that has lasted for more than six decades. Cuba’s inclusion on that list is a political act—unjust and lacking legal basis—that contradicts historical truth and exacerbates the suffering of the Cuban people.

We stand in solidarity with the position of CARICOM. We support the firm stance taken by Caribbean nations which, marking CARICOM–Cuba Day Against Terrorism, have demanded an end to the blockade and the removal of Cuba from the List of State Sponsors of Terrorism. As part of the Caribbean family, Saint Lucia shares bonds of friendship, cooperation, and brotherhood with Cuba—bonds that must prevail over any external pressure.

We denounce the humanitarian impact of these measures. The blockade and the unilateral designation directly affect Cuban families, limit access to medicines, food, fuel, and basic supplies, and hinder the medical and educational cooperation that Cuba selflessly offers to nations across the Caribbean and the world. No people deserve to be collectively punished for defending their sovereignty.

We reaffirm our commitment to friendship and solidarity. As the Saint Lucia–Cuba Friendship Association, we ratify our commitment to continue working for unity, mutual respect, and cooperation between our peoples. Cuba is not alone. Saint Lucia stands with Cuba. The Caribbean stands with Cuba.

Long live the friendship between Saint Lucia and Cuba!

No to terrorism! No to the blockade! Remove Cuba from the list of State Sponsors of Terrorism!

Issued in Saint Lucia on October 6, 2026.
