Mr. President,
We thank the Advisory Committee for its presentation.
We reiterate Cuba’s support for its mandate as an indispensable body of the Council, tasked with assessing and submitting to Member States for consideration action-oriented proposals on issues of interest and relevance.
Regarding the thematic study, we agree on the urgent need to develop national and international strategies and policies to regulate the development and use of digital technologies, in order to help eradicate technology-facilitated gender-based violence and its negative impact on women and girls.
We cannot allow the platforms and algorithms of major technology monopolies to become instruments of psychological and sexual violence against women. These tools must serve gender equality and the empowerment of women.
Cuba denounces the negative consequences of a digital ecosystem dominated by large transnational corporations, which reproduce and amplify patriarchal structures of domination.
This digital violence is an extension into cyberspace of the discrimination, inequality, and lack of equitable access to technology experienced by women, which exacerbate the digital divide and undermine their human rights.
We urge the Advisory Committee, in future studies on this matter, to go beyond practical recommendations and further examine the obligations of States and technology companies to dismantle these networks of digital violence.
Thank you very much.
