Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor
We, citizens and friends of the Caribbean peace, justice, sovereignty, and the principles of international law, issue this declaration to categorically condemn and firmly reject the recent executive order issued by the Government of the United States against the Republic of Cuba, as well as the continued tightening of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed on the Cuban people for more than six decades.
This policy, long discredited and morally indefensible, constitutes an act of collective punishment against an entire nation. Far from promoting stability or cooperation in our region, it deliberately deepens suffering, restricts access to essential goods, and aggravates humanitarian conditions for millions of Cuban civilians. Its objective is not democracy or human rights, but coercion and submission—an objective it has failed to achieve and will continue to fail.
The Caribbean knows from its own history the cost of domination and the value of sovereignty. We therefore reject, without ambiguity, any attempt to legitimize the blockade under the false and baseless claim that Cuba poses a threat to the United States. This assertion has been overwhelmingly repudiated by the international community, as evidenced year after year by the near-unanimous vote of the United Nations General Assembly demanding an end to this illegal policy.
We denounce the extraterritorial application of these measures, which seek to intimidate and punish third countries, institutions, and companies for exercising their sovereign right to engage in lawful relations with Cuba. Such actions violate international law, undermine multilateralism, and erode the principles of equality and non-intervention among States.
The peoples of the Caribbean also affirm Cuba’s historic and unwavering solidarity with our region. For decades, Cuba has shared its human resources and expertise—particularly in health care, education, disaster response, and culture—without conditions, coercion, or political manipulation. This record of cooperation stands in stark contrast to policies of isolation and aggression.
From the Caribbean, we raise our collective voice to demand the immediate lifting of the blockade against Cuba and the repeal of the recent executive order. We call for a relationship between nations based on dialogue, mutual respect, and peaceful coexistence, not unilateral imposition or economic warfare.
History confirms that solidarity among peoples is stronger than any policy of aggression.
Cuba is not alone.
The Caribbean stands with Cuba.
