Statement of Solidarity with Cuba and the Cuban People
The Norway-Cuba Friendship Association (Cubaforeningen i Norge) expresses its unwavering solidarity and support for the Cuban people in the face of the tragic disaster that struck the Supertanker Base in Matanzas last Friday. We send our condolences and love to the families and friends of those who have died, who were injured, and who are still missing following the devastating fire.
We have been closely following the rapid response from the Cuban government and the people, and we are encouraged by the heroism and fighting spirit that we are seeing, both from the firefighters and the military, the Cuban Red Cross, medical personnel, and local individuals, who have been participating in the rescue and evacuation efforts. We have seen this unity, strength and resolve help Cubans overcome difficulties in the past, and we have faith that Cubans will similarly overcome and recover from the current tragedy.
We are also inspired by the international response from countries around the world. In addition to messages of solidarity, we are pleased to see the unconditional material support, resources and volunteers provided by Mexico and Venezuela in fighting the fire, as well as concrete commitments from China, Russia, Nicaragua, Argentina and Chile, among others. Our organization also asks the government of Norway to join in the global humanitarian campaign and to provide support for the Cuban people. In the meantime, the Norway-Cuba Friendship Association commits to a donation of 50 000 Norwegian kroner to the people of Cuba.
We again reiterate our unconditional solidarity and support to Cuba in the face of this crisis. The importance of Cuba for the world cannot be overstated. Just as they have stood in solidarity with struggling peoples all around the globe, so will we continue standing with them. Cuba is not alone!
