Another week of the COVID-19 battle in Cuba began with the encouraging news of only 20 new cases and 24 medical discharges in a single day, while the government continues its daily analysis of the situation, reaffirming that despite the epidemic’s favorable development we cannot lower our guard in the slightest.
Emphasizing this premise, President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez and Prime Minister Manuel Marrero Cruz, led Monday’s meeting of the prevention and control task in the Palace of the Revolution.
In a national update, Public Health Minister José Ángel Portal Miranda explained that 9,229 people have been admitted for care and surveillance. Of these, 2,573 are hospitalized; 973 are under treatment at centers for lower-risk suspected cases; and another 5,509 contacts of confirmed cases remain in isolation sites.
Along with stay-at-home orders, active community monitoring remains essential to Cuba's effort to combat the pandemic, with personnel going door to door, seeking unreported cases, to ensure timely treatment, he noted.
The Minister confirmed that in 12 provinces and the Isle of Youth, 39 open transmission events have been identified, a figure that has remained stable in recent days. These communities have been placed under more restrictive measures, and provided added support.
Before the end of April, he stated, four of these quarantines will end, since no new cases have appeared - these are the Camilo Cienfuegos community, in Consolación del Sur; La Ruda in San José de las Lajas; Naranjal in Matanzas; and Turiguanó in Morón.
