Jakarta, April 10th. - At the secretariat of the ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation, based in this capital, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba, Tania Velázquez López, was received by the Executive Director of the Institute for Peace and ASEAN Reconciliation, Mr. I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja.
During the meeting, both parties exchanged about the historical and positive relations that unite the Caribbean island with the block of ten countries that make up the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
The Executive Director stated that the Institute is an ASEAN entity dedicated to research activities on peace, conflict management and resolution, while noting that ten years after its establishment, the Institute has carried out various activities, including projects research, capacity building programs, online and face-to-face webinars on various stages of peace processes, as well as strengthening cooperation between research and academic institutions for knowledge sharing and information dissemination.
For her part, the Cuban Ambassador to Indonesia and to ASEAN, reiterated Cuba's commitment to the group to strengthen ties, based on the ASEAN Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation, to which Cuba it officially joined in November 2020, an action with which it became the first Caribbean country and fifth Latin American country to be part of it. Likewise, the Cuban diplomat praised the role played by Indonesia, this year in which it holds the pro tempore Presidency of ASEAN for the region to be able to face the current challenges and generate more opportunities for the entire community.
In 2012 during the 21st ASEAN Summit in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, ASEAN leaders adopted a Joint Declaration on the Establishment of an ASEAN Institute for Peace and Reconciliation.
