Abuja, February 5 2025– As part of the 5th National Conference of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Nigeria, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cuba to Nigeria, Miriam Morales Palmero, took part in sessions that brought together diplomatic representatives, international experts, and local authorities to discuss the challenges and opportunities in the field of intellectual property (IP).
During her remarks, Ambassador Morales Palmero emphasized Cuba’s commitment to the development of knowledge, innovation, and creativity as key drivers of sustainable growth, particularly across the Global South. She also highlighted the importance of international cooperation in democratizing access to intellectual property tools and in promoting respect for the rights of creators, scientists, and inventors.
The conference, organized by WIPO’s national office in Nigeria, aims to raise awareness, provide technical training, and build capacity in IP matters among government institutions, universities, small and medium-sized enterprises, and stakeholders in the creative economy.
WIPO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads global efforts to ensure that the intellectual property system functions as an incentive for innovation and creativity worldwide. Among its strategic objectives are strengthening the institutional capacities of member states, supporting national regulatory frameworks, and promoting equitable access to knowledge.
Cuba’s participation in this type of forum reflects its commitment to strengthening partnerships with African countries, in a spirit of solidarity and mutual learning, and to sharing best practices in the protection and management of intellectual property, in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.
This conference marks a significant step toward fostering a culture of innovation and intellectual property in Nigeria and consolidates WIPO’s role as a key partner in the continent’s development efforts.
