Geneva, November 15, 2023. The progress of the Cuban people in human rights was widely recognized during the presentation and defense of the national report within the framework of the IV cycle of the Universal Periodic Review of the Council of human rights.
The Cuban delegation, chaired by Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla, presented the most relevant aspects of the country's performance in this area over the last five years, its experiences and good practices, including the extensive process of legislative reform. The challenges that still persist in moving towards the full realization of all human rights for all were examined.
In the interactive dialogue with Member States, which included 145 interventions, national results in implementing the recommendations accepted during the third cycle were highlighted; and new recommendations were made to support the country's efforts and address the challenges related to the promotion and protection of human rights.
The country's progress in the area of economic, social and cultural rights, including the right to development, and international cooperation actions have drawn praise and been presented as an example of good practices to follow. Likewise, the existence in Cuba of its own political, economic and social system, sovereignly elected by the people through its Constitution, was recognized, which constitutes an example of popular participation, inclusion and social justice.
Many delegations also spoke of the resilience of the Cuban people and the need to continue to denounce the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States government, which constitutes the most serious violation of the human rights of our people. right to life, health and development.
Next Friday, November 17, the adoption of the preliminary report of the Working Group on the Universal Periodic Review of Cuba is scheduled, which must be approved by decision of the Human Rights Council at its next 55th session, in March 2024.
