Georgetown, April 21, 2020. Members of the Movement of Solidarity with Cuba and Cubans residing in Guyana have come together to support Cubans stranded in this country due to the closure of airports and cancellation of flights to the island, motivated by the Covid19.
Halim Khan, President of this solidarity organization and of the West Demerara Chamber of Commerce, has made it possible to donate food to the neediest Cubans, as an altruistic gesture, which is also a sign of the friendship of supporters with Cuba and its Revolution.
Other entrepreneurs such as Archie´s and Son belonging to Sand and Stone Supply and Sea Transport, Khan´s Auto Sales, Mohammad and Hasseb Bachchus of the Meat Center, Khan´s Construction and Heavy Duty Equipment Rental, Mohamed´s Halaal Meat Center & Variety Store, among others, have joined to this noble endeavor.
Meat and agricultural products, merchandise of another nature such as: trays, cutlery, napkins, among other supplies, have been donated by them and systematically sent to the places of lodging where some Cubans are in need, which helps to alleviate the situation they are facing at this point of time.
Likewise, Cuban residents of Guyana, such as Dr. Mayte Camacho, have facilitated appointment to sick Cuban nationals and the acquisition of medications for those who suffer from chronic diseases, as well as Professor Carmen Samé and her Guyanese husband, Abdul Yusuf, a sugar businessman, who have donated food and Basdeo Persaud, are among other people who have collaborated selflessly for this purpose.
The hostels and rental houses managed by Cubans such as "Hostal Fermín", "Hostal Bárbara", "Hostal Harry" and "Hostal Nieves" "Hostal El Sol", among others, have welcomed Cubans at low prices and some free of charge, as a sign of solidarity with the affected Cubans.
Likewise, the Embassy wishes to highlight the informative work carried out by the Cuban journalist Alfredo Ballesteros, who through social networks and his radio space "Hola Guyana", has provided timely and useful information to the stranded Cubans and, in general, to the Spanish-speaking community residing in Guyana, on various topics, including the conflict with the COVID-19 pandemic.
The officials and workers of the Cuban Embassy to Guyana, in particular, Ambassador Narciso Reinaldo Amador Socorro and Consul Ricardo Lamas Camejo, wish to thank the nobility and kindness of Guyanese people and solidarity Cubans have had with the nationals of the land of José Martí in these difficult moments.
