Namibia, October 15, 2020 - Hon. Hamunyera Hambyuka, SWAPO Party Chief Whip in the National Assembly of Namibia, in a meeting with the Ambassador of Cuba to that African country, Sidenio Acosta, highlighted the humanistic work carried out by the "Henry Reeve" International Medical Brigade specialized in Disaster Situations and Serious Epidemics. Accordingly, he expressed his personal support for the international campaign for the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to the Cuban internationalist brigade.
The Cuban diplomat thanked the Namibian parliamentary leader for his position. He also highlighted some of the main milestones of the “Henry Reeve” Brigade, in its 15 years of work. He referred to the labor carried out in Haiti and Pakistan, after both countries were affected by earthquakes, to the cooperation against Ebola in Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea, as well as the deployment in 31 countries of 38 medical brigades to fight against Covid -19.
On the other hand, Ambassador Acosta also updated his interlocutor on the current state of bilateral relations between Cuba and the United States. Specifically, it addressed matters related to the terrorist attack perpetrated against the Cuban Embassy in Washington. In this regard, he criticized the double standards of the US government, which has not condemned the act or classified it as a terrorist act.
Hambyuka, for his part, condemned the terrorist attack and the aggressive US policy to Cuba. Similarly, he reiterated the position of his party and government of unwavering support to Cuba and called for the unconditional lifting of the US blockade.
Finally, both agreed to continue working to strengthen the historic ties of friendship that unite Cuba and Namibia.
Namibia has a bicameral parliament, made up of the National Assembly and the National Council. Both chambers are dominated by SWAPO. The Assembly is made up of 104 seats, of which 71 belong to the SWAPO bench.
