The Swedish-Cuban Association sends our heartfelt condolences to the families of those killed, injured and missing in the fire accident in Matanzas. Our thoughts go also to the emergency services and medical personnel who are doing their best to extinguish the fire and treat the injured.
We are deeply moved that Mexico and Venezuela are sending specialized technical teams, fire fighting materials and chemicals to assist in this extremely difficult situation. Latin American leaders affirm that Cuba has always sent its doctors and emergency teams when their countries have been affected by tragedies such as hurricanes, earthquakes and pandemics. Now Cuba needs our solidarity. And even more so because of the criminal blockade that the US government maintains against the island. We demand that the United States immediately lift its blockade to facilitate the delivery of aid to fight the fires and treat the injured.
We call on our own government in Sweden, as well as the European Union, to urgently offer practical assistance to Cuba to alleviate this catastrophe, in the spirit of the EU-Cuba Political Dialogue and Cooperation Agreement (PDCA).
In solidarity and friendship with the people of Matanzas and Cuba, the Swedish-Cuban Association now opens its solidarity fundraising account to support Cuba in assisting Matanzas at this critical moment - Mediciner för Kuba, Pg 23 57 15-0, reference: MATANZAS
