The first session of the recently established Thailand-Latin America and Caribbean Business Council took place on 25 August 2020, with the participation of Ambassadors from nine Latin American countries (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama and Peru) as “honorary members”.
The creation of this Business Council, with a regional focus, arises as an initiative of the Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking of Thailand (JSCCIB) made up of the Chamber of Commerce (TCC), the Federation of Industries (FTI) and the Bankers Association of Thailand (TBA).
The Council's scope of action covers sectors such as food, mining, manufacturing, energy, health, machinery and equipment, aviation, services (banking, tourism, hotels, transportation, construction), which already carry out or wish to carry out business with Latin American countries and the Caribbean. Thai government institutions such as the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Industry, the Board of Investment and the Export-Import Bank of Thailand also participate as honorary members.
Mr. Montri Mahaplerkpong, President of the Business Council and Vice President of the FTI, highlighted that Latin America and the Caribbean is a geographical region of the highest interest but little known by Thai businessmen.
Cuba welcomed this timely initiative as a working mechanism that will allow expanding trade relations; boost the potential of ties with Thailand and ASEAN and promote innovation in key sectors for the development of our countries.
