Third Secretary Roberto Soto Martínez, speaks at the interactive dialogue with Special Rapporteur on the right to education. 58th Human Rights Council.

Mr. President:

In Cuba, education is a right of all people, without discrimination. The Cuban State guarantees free, affordable and quality education services, from early childhood to postgraduate university education.

The high standards of literacy, schooling and access to higher education in Cuba are the result of government policies focused on the formation of human values.

We agree with the Special Rapporteur on the importance of creating safe, inclusive and non-discriminatory educational environments.

In Cuban schools and educational institutions, a comprehensive and intersectoral training system is being developed on gender equality and violence, sexual and reproductive rights, confronting discrimination in all its forms and manifestations, zero tolerance of drug trafficking and consumption, civic education, reporting cases of violence, abuse or bullying, among other aspects.

We continue to improve the National Education System, which promotes the participation of the family and the community in the educational process, among other actors.

Our delegation welcomes the fact that the next session of the Social Forum of the Human Rights Council will focus its work on the contribution of education to the promotion, protection and enjoyment of human rights. This will be another space to address the challenges and opportunities in the implementation of the right to education.

Thank you
