Third Secretary Roberto Soto Martínez, speaks on the occasion of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of Kenya. 49th session of the Human Rights Council’s UPR Working Group.

Mr. President,

We extend a warm welcome to the delegation of Kenya. We acknowledge the country's commitment to the Universal Periodic Review.

We commend the ambitious targets set for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including increasing the use of renewable energy sources to generate 90% of the country’s electricity and developing comprehensive climate action projects, implemented through Kenya’s National Climate Change Action Plan (2023-2027).

We acknowledge Kenya’s cooperation with various United Nations human rights mechanisms.

In a constructive spirit, we recommend:

  1. Continue efforts to ensure a safer environment for the country and the region.
  2. Continue ensuring access to justice and the implementation of the National Action Plan for Legal Aid (2017-2022).
  3. Continue the review of the 2014 National Policy and Action Plan on Human Rights.

We wish Kenya success in this review and in implementing the accepted recommendations.

Thank you.
