Nairobi, November 28, 2023- The Executive Board of the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) is celebrating its third session for the year 2023 from 28 to 30 November. The session is taking place fully in-person at the UN-Habitat Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
During the first day session, Cuban delegation praised the commendable work done by H.E Maimunah Modh Sharif, Executive Director of UN-Habitat, during her term in office, which has been successful, remarkable and has left an indelible print. Cuba also welcomed UN-Habitat's efforts to support government policies on urban planning, especially in the countries of the global South. Within this framework, necessary synergies and alliances have been established through the incorporation of other key actors in programs and sub-programs that contribute to the sustainable development of cities and territories through the implementation of the New Urban Agenda.
The Cuban representation took the opportunity to thank the ED and her team for their productive and historic visit to Cuba, in the framework of the Summit of Heads of State and Government of G77+China, held in Havana last September. UN-Habitat's support has been very useful for Cuba in updating tools for the development of urban policies, particularly with the implementation of Cuba’s New Urban Agenda. In this regard, with the support and cooperation of UN-Habitat, Cuba was the first country to develop a National Action Plan, approved by our government in 2019 as a State Plan, which has a natural extension to the local level, thanks to the technical assistance and UN-Habitat’s guideline of guarantying multi-stakeholder and multilevel action in the implementation of the New Urban Agenda.
