The headquarters of the Norwegian Communist Party hosted a heartfelt evening of tribute to Che on the 59th anniversary of his assassination in Bolivia.
Speeches were given by Alexander Sornes, Deputy Leader of the NKP; Ane Hoel, Chair of the Norwegian-Cuban Friendship Association (Cubaforeningen I Norge); Marielle Leraand, leader of the Justice and Peace Party (FOR); Hilda Reyes on behalf of the Committee for a Dignified Chile; Mayo Bustos on behalf of the Communist Party of Chile – Norwegian overseas section; and Carlos Rodríguez on behalf of the Intercontinental Front for Salvadoran Popular Struggle. The latter spoke on behalf of the Latin American solidarity community residing in Norway.
In the various speeches, Che’s human qualities were highlighted, along with his steadfast revolutionary, anti-imperialist and internationalist commitment. There were repeated references to the attempts by Western propaganda to distort Che’s revolutionary legacy, and in response to this, the need to remain active in spreading his revolutionary ideas and actions. There was also widespread condemnation of the multidimensional aggression that the US government continues to direct against the Cuban people, and a reaffirmation of solidarity which – in the justified view of our friends – must translate into greater action by governments in Europe and other regions in the face of the US government’s hegemonic policy, going beyond mere declarations.
In his speech, the Cuban ambassador, after highlighting aspects of Che’s career in Cuba – first as a brilliant guerrilla commander, then as an exemplary minister, as well as his intense diplomatic work – pointed out the far-reaching impact of Che’s internationalist actions in the Congo and Bolivia, which helped to consolidate internationalist ties of cooperation that would later make possible the independence of Guinea-Bissau, Cape Verde, São Tomé, Angola and Mozambique, and which in turn would also lead to the independence of Namibia and the defeat of the racist apartheid regime in South Africa, years later.
On our continent, the Sandinista Revolution and the Salvadoran revolutionaries also drew inspiration from the internationalism championed by Che, as did the Bolivarian Revolution led by Hugo Chávez.
The Cuban diplomat stated that Che’s example was very much present in the heroic actions of the 32 Cuban fighters who gave their lives in Caracas in the face of US aggression on 3 January 2026. Che’s example – his indomitable will and steadfast defence of principles – remains with us today, alongside the work and ideas of our Fidel, and inspires the Cuban people to overcome the enormous economic and social challenges imposed upon us by the brutal intensification of US sanctions aimed to sofocate Cuban economy.
Che and Fidel inspire Cubans in their efforts to defend ther nation against repeated threats of military aggression.
Overcoming a new challenge every day is the best tribute to Che on the 59th anniversary of his assassination and to Fidel on the centenary of his birth.
Eternal glory to Che Guevara.
