St. James, 24 November 2023. A representation of the Cuban State Mission in Jamaica, headed by Ambassador Fermin Quiñones Sanchez, accompanied by members of the Education Brigade, visited the Fidel Castro Campus of the Anchovy Secondary School, in the parish of St. James, to participate in a tribute to the Commander-in-Chief of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz, on the seventh anniversary of his physical disappearance.
The school's principal, Mrs. Lavern Stewart, reaffirmed that its teachers and students would continue to honour and remember Fidel; while reaffirming confidence that the bonds of brotherhood and cooperation between the two nations would continue to strengthen.
Dr. Lennox Reid, a member of the Jamaica-Cuba Friendship Association and a graduate of our country, thanked the humanist and solidarity work of the Greater Antilles in the world and especially in Jamaica, and called on students to excel and follow the legacy of Fidel.
Ambassador Fermín Quiñones Sánchez, in his speech, highlighted the historical links between Jamaica and Cuba. He highlighted the relevance of Fidel's words when he said "After the Revolution Jamaica never joined the blockade against Cuba; the Government of Jamaica never supported the conspiracy and subversion against the Cuban Revolution, no government of Jamaica; and that compels our gratitude and our respect".
As part of the tribute, students from the Campus staged cultural performances, read a biography of the Commander-in-Chief and recited poems in English and Spanish.
