Tribute to José Martí in Jamaica on the 130th anniversary of his fall in combat.

Kingston, 16 May 2025. Jamaican students and their Cuban and Jamaican teachers performed a tribute to the Apostle of Cuban Independence, José Martí in Jamaica, commemorating the 130th anniversary of his fall in battle at Dos Rios.

The event, which took place at the Simon Bolivar Cultural Centre, was attended by members of the diplomatic mission headed by the Ambassador of Cuba in Jamaica Fermin Quiñones Sanchez; representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade of Jamaica and the accredited Diplomatic Corps, and members of the Solidarity Movement and the Cuban Educational Brigade working in this territory.

Through the Versos Sencillos, songs, poems and speeches written by Cuba's National Hero, the audience was introduced to Marti's thought and the imprint of his extensive literary work. The occasion was an opportunity for the students to demonstrate the skills acquired in their Spanish language studies.

In his words to those present, the Cuban Ambassador exhorted the students to continue deepening their knowledge of the life and work of the most universal of Cubans. He ratified the validity of Marti's Latin Americanist and anti-imperialist thinking in the face of the new onslaught of Yankee imperialism against the peoples of Our America; reiterating the call for the unity of the Latin American and Caribbean peoples made by President Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez during the IX Summit of CELAC.
