Tributo a José Martí en Las Bahamas

The Bahamas, 26 July 2019. With the participation of local authorities, members of the Cuban mission and the solidarity group with Cuba and the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of The Bahamas, tribute was paid to José Martí, intellectual author of the assaults on the Moncada and Carlos Manuel de Céspedes barracks on the 66th anniversary of such heroic events.

The monument to José Martí on the island of Inagua, located south of the Bahamian geography, was the ideal site for an act of homage and reaffirmation. The event is also part of the celebrations for the 45th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between The Bahamas and Cuba. On the Bahamian side, the Administrator of the island of Inagua, Juanita Ingraham, the highest authority of the local government was in attendance. She was accompanied by officials of different law enforcement agencies and representatives of the education and culture sectors.

The Cuban Ambassador, Ismara M. Vargas Walter recalled the passage of José Martí through this point of Bahamian geography in April 1895. From there he went to Cuba where he landed with Máximo Gómez by Playita de Cajobabo. The diplomat also explained the reasons why Martí is considered the intellectual author of the July 26, 1953 events under the leadership of Fidel.

The Cuban delegation also visited sites of economic, historical, social and cultural interest in Inagua. The most significant stops were: Morton salt company, the beautiful lighthouse of Inagua with more than a century of existence, the Inagua Healthcare Center, as well as the extensive Inagua National Park, home to over 80 000 flamingos, the national bird of The Bahamas.
