Paris, 7 June 2025. The city of Trinidad, recognized as a UNESCO Creative City and inscribed on the World Heritage List since 1988, hosted a regional workshop that brought together specialists, community representatives and local authorities to discuss and strengthen sustainable tourism practices in heritage sites.
The event is part of UNESCO’s ongoing efforts to support communities in managing and safeguarding their valuable cultural and natural heritage, in line with the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In this regard, the initiative contributes to integrating heritage protection into urban planning and to strengthening sustainable tourism as a driver of local development.
During the meeting, Trinidad’s role as a conservation benchmark was highlighted, thanks to the active participation of its communities in protecting traditions and ancestral knowledge, as well as preserving its historical environment — a living example of the rich cultural legacy of Cuba and the Latin America and Caribbean region.
The workshop is part of the project “Strengthening Capacities for Resilient Communities through Sustainable Tourism and the Safeguarding of the Heritage of Latin America and the Caribbean” (2023-2026), developed by UNESCO together with ten countries in the region, including Cuba, with the aim of reinforcing synergies between the safeguarding of tangible and intangible heritage and empowering communities in their management.
