New York, 24 June 2019. Today, the UN Committee on Decolonization adopted, by consensus, a decision regarding Puerto Rico. The text submitted by Cuba was co-sponsored by Antigua and Barbuda, the Plurinational State of Bolivia, the Republic of Nicaragua, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, the Syrian Arab Republic and the Russian Federation.
This is the twentieth consecutive time that the Committee on Decolonization has adopted a resolution on Puerto Rico by consensus.
The text, among its main elements, reaffirms the inalienable right of the people of Puerto Rico to self-determination and independence; reiterates that Puerto Rico is a Latin American and Caribbean nation with its own unmistakable national identity; and calls on the U.S. Government to assume its responsibility to promote a process that will enable the Puerto Rican people to fully exercise their inalienable right to self-determination and independence.
Since 1972, Cuba has submitted this resolution, which responds to its unequivocal commitment to the self-determination and independence of the brotherly people of Puerto Rico, based on a relationship of deep historical roots and a common struggle of more than a century.
