At the UN, Cuba reaffirms its commitment to promoting regional zones of peace and defending multilateralism

Ambassador Yuri A. Gala López, Chargé d'Affaires, a.i. of the Permanent Mission of Cuba to the United Nations, addressed the General Assembly's high-level meeting on regional zones of peace.

During his speech, the Cuban diplomat stressed that promoting regional zones of peace and cooperation among them is especially significant in a world still ravaged by wars and where genocide against the Palestinian civilian population is committed with total impunity.

Ambassador Gala López emphasized that the Cuban people, who have endured a brutal economic, commercial, and financial blockade, as well as other aggressive actions by the world's dominant power for over six decades, understand and defend the value of peace.

He said that Cuba was honored in 2014 to be the seat from where heads of state and government of 33 countries in our region proclaimed Latin America and the Caribbean as a Zone of Peace. He added "that transcendental document, which emerged from the II Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States, showed the world the unity of our diverse nations around a supreme good: peace."

In the context of the 80th anniversary of the UN, and with 2025 having been declared the International Year of Peace and Trust, the Chargé d'Affaires, a.i. of the Cuban Mission urged the prioritization of dialogue, diplomacy, multilateralism, and strict respect for the principles of international law and the UN charter. "Let us make international relations friendly and cooperative," he said.
