UNESCO Authorities Mourn the Passing of Prominent Cuban Intellectual Eduardo Torres Cuevas

Paris, September 23, 2025. — The UNESCO Regional Office for Culture in Latin America and the Caribbean, based in Havana, has issued a statement expressing profound sorrow over the death of Professor Eduardo Torres Cuevas, a distinguished Cuban intellectual, historian, researcher, and member of the UNESCO José Martí International Prize Jury.

In the statement, UNESCO recognized Dr. Torres Cuevas’s extensive career and his contribution to the study, teaching, and preservation of Cuban history and thought. The Organization highlighted his leadership of highly significant cultural institutions, including the José Martí National Library of Cuba, the Cuban Academy of History, the José Martí Cultural Society, and the Cuban Alliance Française, as well as his unwavering commitment to promoting humanistic values and intellectual cooperation.

On September 23, the Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of the Republic of Cuba to UNESCO, H.E. María del Carmen Herrera Caseiro, received a letter of condolence from the Acting Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences of UNESCO, expressing the Organization’s recognition of Professor Torres Cuevas as an eminent intellectual whose contributions embody UNESCO’s fundamental values.

From the Permanent Delegation of Cuba to UNESCO, gratitude was conveyed for these expressions of respect and solidarity, reaffirming that Professor Torres Cuevas’s legacy is a living heritage for the culture and social sciences of Cuba, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
