Unilateral coercive measures constitute an obstacle to the exercise of the right to development.

Nueva York, 13 de octubre de 2023.- Cuba participated this Friday in the combined Interactive Dialogue with the President-Rapporteur of the Working Group on the Right to Development, Mr. Zamir Akram; the President of the Expert Mechanism on the Right to Development, Ms. Liliana Valiña and the Special Rapporteur on the Right to Development, Mr. Surya Deva, which took place at the United Nations headquarters.

During his intervention, the Counselor of the Cuban Permanent Mission, Alejandro González Behmaras, said that almost forty years after the Declaration on the Right to Development was adopted, this human right cannot be allowed to continue to be minimized by some and unknown by others.

He explained that the right to development is an inalienable human right whose materialization is essential to advance the promotion and protection of all human rights for all.

He also stated that for many countries to be able to advance in this matter, it is necessary to put an end to the application of unilateral coercive measures, a practice that constitutes an affront to the self-determination of peoples, violates the Charter of the United Nations and the Law international, and represents an obstacle to the exercise of the right to development.

González Behmaras denounced that the blockade imposed by the United States government, the main obstacle to the socio-economic development of Cuba, directly affects the realization of the right to development of the Cuban people.
