In United Nations, Cuba reiterates its steadfast solidarity with the Palestinian cause

New York, May 1, 2024.- Cuba described it as shameful that, once again, the United States government has prevented the realization of the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people.

During his remarks at the plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on the use of the veto in the Security Council, Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Permanent Representative of Cuba to the United Nations, denounced that, with the most recent veto, United States deprived the State of Palestine of its right to join the United Nations as a full member.

Soberón Guzmán further explained that Palestine's admission to the United Nations is one of the first and essential steps that are urgently required to achieve a solution to the conflict, and called for reversing, without further delay, the historical injustice.

Likewise, he considered it unacceptable that the Security Council continues without enforcing its own resolutions to put an end to Israel's excesses, in which the United States has historically been complicit, by obstructing and repeatedly using the veto to prevent the Security Council´s action, undermining regional peace, security and stability.

The Caribbean Ambassador denounced that, despite continuous calls for an immediate ceasefire and demands to put an end to the massacre, the flagrant violations of human rights and the ongoing collective punishment, indiscriminate bombings, murders of civilians, forced displacements, the destruction of homes, hospitals and civil infrastructure, which worsen the precarious humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, continue.

"The atrocious actions carried out by Israel have not only affected the Palestinian people, personnel from United Nations agencies and other international actors and representatives of various civil society organizations engaged in humanitarian work have also been victims of these crimes", he added.

Soberón Guzmán reiterated Cuba's strong demand for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in the illegally occupied Palestinian territories; and called to stop the genocide and to end the illegal settler policies and practices that have persisted for more than seven decades.

Before concluding, the Cuban diplomat recalled that the Palestinian people require the firm support of the General Assembly, and warned that every minute of impunity, passivity, double standards or silence will cost more innocent lives.
