At the United Nations, Cuba reiterates the need for comprehensive Security Council reform and urges the body to act accordingly with global challenges

During the plenary meeting of the United Nations General Assembly on the Security Council’s 2024 Annual Report, Ambassador Ernesto Soberón Guzmán, Cuba's Permanent Representative, reaffirmed the urgent need to transform the Council into a transparent, democratic, and representative body. This includes reforming several of its working methods.

He advocated for the General Assembly Annual Report to reflect a critical analysis of the Council's decisions beyond the factual. He emphasized the Council's omission of Israel's repeated violations of its own resolutions and its paralysis in the face of the genocide against the Palestinian people as a result of the United States' systematic use of the veto.

The Cuban diplomat urged the Security Council to fulfill its mandate without political manipulation, selectivity, or double standards and to address the global challenges. He stressed that such inertia undermines multilateralism and the credibility of the UN, urging the body to act immediately and effectively with a sense of justice and well-being for all humanity.

In this context, he emphasized the importance of multilateralism facing the ongoing violations of the UN Charter and international law, the interference in the internal affairs of states, the imposition of unilateral coercive measures for political purposes, and aggressive military doctrines of domination, expansionism, and supremacism.

These violations include interference in the internal affairs of states, the imposition of unilateral coercive measures for political purposes, as well as the aggressive military doctrines of domination, expansionism, and supremacism that alarmingly undermine the international peace and security.

He also reaffirmed the importance of the United Nations' role as it approaches its 80th anniversary and the importance of fully respecting the principles and purposes of the UN Charter and the norms of international law in the face of the international community's unprecedented challenges.
